How is it even February already?! Now that everything has settled down after the Christmas, New Year and School Holidays it’s time to get back to some relaxing, quality time with the family.
Here are some top picks for free things to do this month in Cairns
Saturday 4th February – Chinese New Year Parade
It’s the annual Chinese New Year Parade – held on Grafton Street from 4pm-9pm with the parade itself at 6pm. There is always loads to do for the whole family with stages hosting a program of different entertainers celebrating Cairns’ rich Chinese heritage. There are music, dancers, drummers, dragons, lions and interactive displays. There are always lots of competitions to enter too with great prizes to be won.
The street is lined with food and market stalls – last year we got to make craft and to get our Chinese horoscope told.
The day concludes with firecrackers and fireworks at 9pm.
All the info can be found on the Cairns Council website.
Cairns Regional Gallery
The gallery has family friendly events all month – the highlights for February are…
Saturday February 4th – Family Art Activity Day with Shaun Tan – learn how he adapted his picture book into animated film – including an exhibition and playful, hands on activities – more info here
Animalia Australis – a fascinating exhibition of the depiction of Australian animals from the eyes of the 19th Century explorers. Visiting Cairns from Feb 3rd – 7th March from the art gallery of Ballarat – more info here
There is also a free talk on Feb 2nd from 5.30pm by Gordon Morrison, director of the Art Gallery of Ballarat, discussing works in the exhibition – all welcome.
Sunday 5th February – Live Music at the Lagoon
Cool off with a splash in the Lagoon on the Esplanade and enjoy the awesome sounds of local band The Taste – from 2pm-5pm – bring a picnic! You can sample their sounds on their website here.
Sunday 12th February – Flight Centre Travel Expo at the Convention Centre
If you’re like us and have been bitten by the travel bug this is a fantastic family day out. There are hundreds of exhibitors from destinations across the globe, showcasing air, land, cruise and rail suppliers as well as tourism bodies, hotels and attractions. The event includes travel presentations, a kids’ zone (with face painting), virtual reality experiences and loads more. Plus registration is free and you can win brilliant travel prizes. Check out the official website here for more info, travel talk times and a link to register.
Sports Sign Ups
The New Year is the perfect time to get fit and join a new team – if you’d love to sign up but are not sure where to start get yourself and the family down to the Mount Sheridan Plaza shopping centre every weekend during February for the community sports sign on month – where you will be able to check out all the different sporting clubs throughout the Cairns region all under one (air-conditioned!) roof! You will find your regular favourites from soccer to rugby there – plus lots of different sports and activities to try out – who fancies learning roller derby, Highland and Irish Dance, Kendo or Karting? There is something for everyone – check out the timetable here.
Cairns District Junior Rugby League Sign On Day
Don’t miss the chance to sign up for your favourite club – all Cairns clubs will be there on the day and all new players aged 5-17 are welcome to attend. More info here.
Bunnings Kids’ Workshops and Activities
Perfect for a rainy day – adults and kids can upgrade their crafting and DIY skills at one of the Bunning’s family friendly workshops. During February you can enjoy Chinese New Year, Valentines and Garden Craft workshops – all for free. For the full timetable check out their website here.
Thursday 9th February – A Plastic Ocean – Clink Theatre
So this one isn’t free ($10 a ticket) but I thought well worth a mention – hosted by Sea Shepherd with guest speakers from Tangaroa Blue, Plastic Free Douglas and Low Isles Preservation Society this night would be a great way to educate older kids and adults on the perils of plastic in our oceans. Buy tickets here.
Is there anything that you’ll be doing as a family in TNQ this month that I’ve missed? I’d love to hear about it!
